Ariel first appears in The Little Mermaid, in which she is shown as being adventurous and curious about the world of humans, a fascination which irritates both her father King Triton and his court composer Sebastian, as merfolk are not allowed to make contact with the human world. She and Flounder go in search of human objects, which they take to a seagull named Scuttle for appraisal. Ariel falls in love with a human prince named Prince Eric after saving him from drowning, and visits the sea witch, Ursula, who agrees to turn her into a human in exchange for her voice. Ariel must make Prince Eric fall in love with her and romantically kiss her within three days, lest she belong to Ursula forever.

They do not have sex and therefore they do not have what humans call Lust/Sexual Desire, only Love in forms of affection and longing. Mermaids are born in a magical seashell where the Mermaid drops the egg which is fertilized by the Merman and secured and nurtured within the magic of the seashell. It takes 3 months for the egg to hatch and another 4 months inside the seashell for the baby to grow before it's born.sirens. All mermaids possess a pearl tear deep within their hearts which is the source for their beautiful and enchanting voices. Mermaids are naturally good beings but when they are betrayed or suffer a traumatic experience, they may become wicked. When a mermaid's heart darkens, her pearl tear becomes pitch black, her hair turns raven and her tail becomes covered in thick, sharp-edged scales. They become predators, killers and dangerous creatures with animal instincts who use the siren song to lure humans in and eat them. Whatever logic and intelligence they once possessed is gone and they are no longer their formal selves. That's how sirens are born.healing. Mermaids heal much faster than humans. If Ariel gets injured, in either mermaid or human form, she'll heal 3x faster than a human would. For example, if she broke her ankle, it would take less than one week for it to heal. This does not change no matter how long she's been on land.demigod heritage. As daughter of King Triton and granddaughter of the Greek God Poseidon and nymph Amphitrite, Ariel is a demigod. Following Greek mythology, she is also related to Zeus, Hades, Demeter, Hestia, Hera and Chiron and is also the cousin of Hercules. As a demigod, Ariel and every other descendant of Triton is immortal. After turning 22 years old, her body will stop aging and she will look that way forever. She can, one day, reject her immortality altogether if she wishes to grow old with her loved ones on land, though she needs to go to Poseidon for that. If she's to die, her body will return to the sea and she will eventually be reincarnated.HYDRATION. As a mermaid, water is part of Ariel more than humans. If Ariel goes longer than a day without going into the sea or taking a bath, her skin starts drying up fast and her body will experience an extreme amount of pain. Drinking lots of water can slow down that process but the best solution is a bath or diving in the sea for a quick swim to rehydrate. The more years she spends on land the longer she can go without feeling the immense pain caused by dehydration.MERMAID'S KISS. A kiss from a mermaid gives any human the ability to temporarily breathe underwater.

Eric and Ariel remained good friends and Eric and his parents allowed Ariel residence in their castle in Sardinia along with a royal advisor from Atlantica to keep an eye on her. Her father gave her an enchanted necklace that allows her to turn back into a mermaid whenever she wishes to do so. She left home at sixteen and has been living in the human world for two year, having experienced discrimination for being a mermaid by humans unable to accept someone different from themselves, and having received death threats by those humans. Regardless, she still loves land and the way humans live and wishes to travel all over the world.
